It’s been more than a year since I attended a Clinique workshop. Since I had no plans for this weekend, I decided to occupy my time by purchasing a RM50 voucher to attend the Clinique makeup workshop presented by their trainer, David Ooi this morning. The turn-out was very good and it’s nice to see so many Clinique fans.

David started off by explaining the importance of good skin as a base to makeup. “Start with clean skin as good skin deserves good makeup,” he said. Since this was a hands-on workshop, we got to try the Clinique 3-step skincare of cleanse, clarify and moisturise. After applying sunblock, David demonstrated easy techniques of applying make-up on the lovely model, Gail from Teheran, Iran.

Next, David explained the differences between different kinds of foundation such as cream compact, liquid foundation and powder foundation or 2-way cake which should not be used for touch-ups. The foundation used by all the attendees of the workshop was Clinique’s latest Pore Solutions Foundation which minimises the apperance of pores.

David said, “Find a shade of foundation that disappears into your skin, that is the right shade for you. Start from the forehead and blend downwards because facial hair grows downwards, this will avoid a powdery look.” He started blending foundation on to Gail’s forehead, then proceeded to the nose, cheek, upper lip and chin. He recommends blending in circular motions to cover up open pores. To finish off, warm up palms by rubbing both palms together. Then blend in downwards motion gently. Blend till no fingerprints can be seen on the foundation. To make sure there is no excess foundation on sides of lips, nose and jawline, use ring fingers to press in gently.

Applying loose powder

Loose powder is necessary to set and hold in foundation + prolonging the duration of foundation and absorb excess oil. Start blending in powder from oily areas of the face. If using a brush, make sure the powder goes into the brush.

David used Lid Smoothie as a base for powder eyeshadow to help hold eyeshadow and keep the eyeshadow colour looking as it did when first applied. He pressed in the Lid Smoothie with his fingertips. As for a powder eyeshadow palette, the principle is simple. Just use the lightest shade all over the eyelid, the medium shade on the inner corner of the eyelid and the darkest shade on the outer corner of the eyelid.

Applying eyeshadow

To prevent eyeliner from smudging, ensure that the texture of the eyeliner is very thin. For oily lids, tap a bit of eyeshadow on top of eyeliner. For maximum effect lashes, apply mascara downwards first and then in a zig-zag motion upwards.
