A Gem Of An Italian Restaurant In Downtown KL

Nice bar area for aperitifs @ Sassolino

A few weeks ago, I caught up with a friend at Sassolino Italian Restaurant @ Star Boulevard along Jalan Yap Kwan Seng. My friend had forgotten the name of the restaurant or even that it was located at Star Boulevard. We found it just based on his hunch that it was along Jalan Yap Kwan Seng. Parking @ Star Boulevard is no problem, plenty of space thanks to their exorbitant parking fee. It’s RM5 for the 1st hour followed by RM4 for subsequent hours but come after 6pm on a weekday and it’s RM8 flat rate.

Anyway, hardly any customers when we entered Sassolino. At first glance, very lovely ambiance with spacious blue seats and a bar area you really want to hang out at after working hours as it’s quite Instagrammable.

The regular menu is handed out by the friendly waiter who makes suggestions for lunch, along with the set lunch menu which is not as expensive as one would expect for a swanky Italian eatery. I was pleasantly surprised at the price of the 2-course and 3-course lunch.

Lunch menu

For starters, we each chose the Salad which consists of Hard Boiled Egg, Grilled Turkey Ham, Tomatoes, Mixed Greens and Onions while for the main course, my friend ordered the Pork Loin Milanese Style Primavera served with Tomato Concasse and Garden Greens while I opted for the Wild Catch Fish Fillet with Mixed Grilled Vegetables and Basil Pesto.

I would say the salad came in a generous portion with sufficient Grilled Turkey Ham and possibly an entire egg sliced.

Both main courses were cooked very well and again came in generous portions. It’s hard to find a restaurant that ticks the “quality” and “quantity” boxes but Sassolino does satisfy both criteria. No complaints for both main courses, they are top quality in every way.

Panna Cotta

Dessert was Panna Cotta (no options to choose from) which while nice was a little too sweet for me and I ended up unable to finish it as I have such a low tolerance for sweetness. I feel that this would have been a divine dessert if they had only toned down the sugar level.

Overall, service was excellent especially from the waiter who seated us and handed out the menus. There’s nothing worse than being in a fancy restaurant and getting bad service which was certainly not the case here.
