Irritating Errors In Print Media

error

It’s one thing to spot spelling or grammatical errors when I read online material and quite another to keep reading common English mistakes in the dailies for which I have paid good money for. I can’t believe the mistakes that are printed – I can spot more than a few every week!

I am not going to go into ALL the errors I have seen because that would take too long. Just the ones I remember seeing this week alone. I wonder why I subscribe to the dailies when I feel like correcting the writers every time I spot an error.

Mistake #1

Please be patience.

It should read “please be patient.” If you want to use “patience”, it should be in this context “patience is a virtue”.

Mistake #2

The scent envelopes me.

It should read “the scent envelops me.” An envelope is for sending letters. It will not “envelope” you unless you are a sheet of paper.

Mistake #3

We past the mountain on the way to our destination.

It should read “we passed the mountain on the way to our destination.”

I can’t explain the difference between a noun and an adjective or verb but I have a gut instinct when it comes to English and lately, it’s really irritated me to see errors which shouldn’t appear in print media. Let’s not even go into the English in blogs, that would take me days to list the errors. Not that it matters to the majority of brands.

  1. it is really hilarious the way you put it but yes, there are many mistakes. The one you mentioned is not just typing errors which always happened to me. These are really serious grammar mistakes since “patience” and “patient” is for two different usage. One is a noun and the one is a verb.

As for second, it should be enveloped -past tense of envelop. I like the way you put it because envelope is a piece of paper to send to someone.hahahahahahha

Mistake three-How can someone “past”? The meaning is not there.
