National Kidney Foundation Open Day 2018

dsc_1131This morning, I popped over to Berjaya Resource Centre, PJ to check out the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Open Day 2018. They were offering free health checks open to the public and I also wanted to avail myself of their services as it has been a few months since my last blood pressure check, it was high then but what about now?

The NKF Open Day 2018 is held in conjunction with World Kidney Day (WKD) 2018. The free health screening was fast and easy. After completing the registration form, just sit down for a few minutes and wait for your name to be called. Then your height and weight are taken and you get the results of your Body Mass Index (BMI). My results are okay, I am not obese thankfully but I can lose another kilo or two.

They will take your blood pressure, you are asked to give a urine sample so that they can check on the health of your kidneys (again my results are fine). The only thing that worries me is my blood pressure is still high! You can also get results of your blood glucose and blood cholesterol level (a RM5 charge is imposed for the cholesterol test).

A health talk on the importance of annual medical check-up was conducted by Encik Nizam bin Yusof, Consultancy Manager of Medi Diastika Sdn Bhd to encourage members of the public to take charge of their own health. as determining bodily functions can help identify any abnormalities of disease before they can worsen, display symptoms and pose a significant risk.

With the theme of WKD being ‘Include, Value, Empower’ this year, Dr Nor Fadhlina Binti Zakaria from Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University Putra Malaysia also gave a health talk on ‘Supplements, Women and Kidneys Health’ to reflect on the importance of womens’ health and specifically their kidney health.

WKD is observed globally every year on the second Thursday of March. This year, WKD promotes affordable and equitable access to health education, healthcare and prevention for kidney diseases for all women and girls in the world. The event will also raise awareness on the need for timely diagnosis and proper follow up of chronic kidney disease in pregnancy.
